Focusing on the goals

I’ve been talking a lot about goals recently in my house. For one thing, because of this big goal I have to write, show my passion, and use my voice. Nevertheless, what is most exciting is that my five-year-old son, the sponge, declared the other day unexpectedly that his goal was to shower on his own. Throughout that day, he listed two other goals he would like to accomplish. One, being kinder to friends. This coming after a talk I had with him around being nice to everyone, even if others aren’t. The second, not having a tantrum when Mommy and Daddy tell him to nap because we know he is insanely tired and will soon fall flat on his face from exhaustion (as I write this it’s 8:10AM and he has yet to wake up for the day! Yes, you are tired. Yes, you are growing.).

By no means did I mean to make this a thing. I didn’t purposely want to teach a lesson or ensure he is setting goals. Yet it happened. He soaked up my words, saw my passion for what I was talking about, and quickly formed his own.

This make me wonder, how often should we be setting goals? I’m new to this goal game. Truthfully, I’ve never really thought about having concrete everyday goals in my life. We all have our big monumental goals like have a baby or graduate college or buy a new car, but what about living life everyday with smaller, more thought driven goals. Is this possible or too much?
